On behalf of the Sergeant Major of the Army and the NCO Journal, the Harding Project is proud to announce the launch of Muddy Boots. This subsection of NCOJ will capture the most valuable experiences of our senior noncommissioned officers in an LPD-ready format and challenge the NCO Corps to engage in professional discourse to strengthen the profession.
This is a lead-from-the-front approach. The articles in the Muddy Boots collection are written by nominative command sergeants major. They capture the most valuable experiences from their extensive careers and share them with the Army—lest we painfully repeat them.
First in the chute, Sergeant Major of the Army Michael Weimer! Check out his article in the Muddy Boots section of the NCO Journal.
Combat Doesn’t Care: How Ready Are You?
By Sgt. Maj. of the Army Michael R. Weimer
The SMA recounts a challenging combat mission in Iraq, where his team faced unexpected resistance while pursuing a high-value target. The intense firefight tested their readiness and discipline. In this article, the SMA emphasizes the importance of preparation and leadership in large-scale combat operations (LSCO). Mastering the basics and being genuinely prepared are crucial for success, especially in future conflicts against near-peer adversaries.
As Muddy Boots kicks off, we invite all NCOs to dive into these seniors' insights, lessons, and reflections. This is more than just reading—it’s a call to action to engage, reflect, and discuss. Through the Muddy Boots, we aim to foster an environment where every shared experience adds to the collective wisdom.
So, lace up, lean in, and check out these excellent insights, which strengthen the NCO Corps and prepare us all for the challenges ahead!
Fantasy work on this project! Looking forward to you meeting and maybe mentoring my son as he integrates into the 173rd later this year.
Thanks for your service to our Warriors and their families.
Thank you for this inspiring message!
