The Army Sustainment Professional Bulletin (ASPB) has been in publication since 1969 supporting the sustainment enterprise. Over the years, it has covered a wide variety of new innovations and operating procedures on how the sustainer supports the warfighter. As part of the Chief of Staff of the Army’s new Harding Project initiative, the ASPB has welcomed their first Harding Fellow, CPT Garett Pyle.
The Harding Project places uniform servicemembers back with the Army’s professional writing journals. They serve as their publication’s Military Editor-In-Chief and benefit from the expertise that their civilian editor counterparts bring. CPT Garett Pyle has served since 2012, with his most recent assignment as an instructor for the Logistics Captains Career Course at the Army Sustainment University. Having published an article as a first lieutenant, the transition into the editor-in-chief position has been a smooth one.
New Initiatives
After only being in the seat for a few weeks now, ASPB is launching multiple initiatives to increase engagement and to broaden the scope of the journal.
Did You Know?
The first initiative is creating a “Did You Know?” section that will focus on new sustainment initiatives and developments.
For example, the first article in this section will be titled “STAMP: Advanced Power Distribution as a Force Multiplier.” This article will highlight the development of the Secure Tactical Advanced Mobile Power (STAMP), which is a highly mobile microgrid that uses a variant of FMTVs called the High-Power Variant. This new system can export significantly more power than a single tow-behind generator. Moving forward, this system will increase mobility and reduce our operating footprint, thus increasing our base cluster survivability. This article was written by Chief Warrant Officer 3 Sean McClenachan, Mr. Smauel Gwinn, and Mr. Joseph McFillin, and will be available in the fall edition of the ASPB.
Captains Career Corner
The second initiative is creating a “Captains Career Corner” featuring writings from students currently in the career course. The two focus areas will be the principles of mission command and an argumentative section. The area of principles of mission command enables students to analyze historical examples of the principles and how they can be applied today. The argumentative section provides students with the opportunity to present solutions to current issues facing the Army/sustainment enterprise. The first article is by Captain John Morrissey and will draw mission command lessons from the Second Battle of Fallujah.

Other initiatives
Additionally, CPT Pyle is also working toward launching a podcast for the ASPB that will provide an opportunity for authors to expand on their articles and to provide greater depth to the force. Additionally, he is looking through back issues of the ASPB to select articles for republishing that apply to the theme of the current publication or that are relevant to current challenges.
